What’s Niche Marketing And Can I Use It To My Advantage?

niche marketing

The car above is a Ferrari F430, nice eh? This is probably one of the most extreme examples of a niche market. Unless you live in Monaco or Miami that is ;)

So what’s this niche business?

The word ‘Niche’ is basically defined as: “A special area of demand for a product or service”. ‘Marketing’ as we know it is: “The opportunity to buy or sell”. Now, If you put both those words together you get “niche marketing”. In effect this means buying or selling a product or service in a special area of demand.

If you produce a product or service this is more than likely gonna be sold to the people who are most interested in that particular product or service and not the world in general.

In Present times big businesses use niche marketing to their advantage. Let’s use an example, a company that makes computers and computer accessories might advertise all-in-one copy/printer/scanners (I believe HP are great for this type of thing) to the home computer user while at the same time advertising single function machines to large businesses. This is still a huge market, but a niche one at that!

Try Not To Be All Things To All Women

One of the things that make niche marketing so attractive to sellers is that their advertising budgets go further. It costs less to advertise to a specialized market than it does to advertise to a broader market. So what’s Des trying to say? Well in a nutshell, whatever your trying to sell or market, try not to be all things to all women. Not only will you stand out from the crowd, you’ll have much more chance of being seen by your target audience.

Niche marketing has gotta be designed to meet the unique needs of the targeted audience. You’ve basically got to tailor your product to meet those unique needs. If, for example, you’ve designed a product to make dog washing easy enough for the untrained professional to do it, those who own dogs will be most interested in your product. Those who own rabbits or cats couldn’t care less. If you’ve written an e-book that’ll explain how to start and succeed on eBay, those who are looking for that information are your niche market. Do you see where I’m going with this?

Niche marketing is a really effective and cost efficient way to advertise and sell specific products or services to a specific audience or, hopefully, buyers of that product or service.

Niche Marketing vs. Internet Marketing Niche

You may think that the two are quite similar? You may be surprised to find out that they’re not. Let me explain……..

Comparing niche marketing and an Internet marketing niche is like comparing apples with oranges. Yeah, they’re both fruit. However, Niche marketing and an Internet Marketing niche are both forms of Internet marketing but as different as apples are from oranges.

The term ‘niche marketing’ means selling a specific product to a specific type of buyer. There are far less competitive niches than an Internet marketing niche.  Most niche markets are much more open to the latest marketing strategies, as well. Small niche markets are not over stocked with  so called gurus and are much easier for the newbie to break into. A niche market allows you to promote your own niche product or that of a niche affiliate product. There is a niche market for anything and everything you can imagine. All it takes to break into a niche market is a good idea, a good product created by you or someone else that will appeal to certain people, some advertising and the desire to succeed.

The Internet marketing niche on the other hand means that you’ll be promoting your own Internet marketing product. This is a very crowded field and really difficult to break into. It’s a world filled with so called gurus who’ve been playing and winning the game for a long time. This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to cash in on the Internet marketing niche, of course you can. It’s a world still built on demand and that means that if you have a product that can compete and if you have the willingness to play hard ball with the big boys then you can succeed at the Internet marketing niche game.

Do you agree?

As always, your comments are more than welcome.

I agree, my “niche” is travel but I don’t strictly report on travel nor do I quote deals. I focus on the quirky and odd moment in travel theses days.

@ Debo – Wow, that’s one competitive market, but if you get it right you can make a ton of money. I’ve got a airport parking site that was my first website built about 2 years ago. It doesn’t make loads of $$$ but it makes nice residual income. I should really get round to updating it, but I’d have to add it to the other 1001 different projects on the go at the moment ;) .

I’d like to take a look your quirky and odd moment travel niche. Sounds interesting!

    Thanks for your comment Debo.
